Far Cry 6 Quietly Killed Off as Ubisoft Bids Farewell

In a recent announcement from Ubisoft, Far Cry 6 is gracefully being retired. The studio reportedly is focusing on developing a single-player sequel and a live-service multiplayer follow-up. While the online services for the game will persist, no future updates are planned. Yara, the virtual setting of Far Cry 6, is destined to remain static until the eventual cessation of online services.

The disclosure came via the official Far Cry Twitter account, where Ubisoft assured players that uninterrupted online services would continue.

It was emphasized that the development team would cease updates for Far Cry 6 and all new updates to the adventures in Yara. The announcement did not explicitly state the rationale behind this decision. However, with two years elapsed since the game’s release and a new Far Cry installment on the horizon, the inference is apparent.

Earlier rumors circulating in January hinted at Ubisoft’s development of a Far Cry extraction shooter alongside a more conventional Far Cry 7. If substantiated, this approach seems poised to introduce a novel dynamic to the series. It is more apparent that Ubisoft is drawing inspiration from games like Escape from Tarkov or Call of Duty’s DMZ mode.

Acknowledging the series’ need for innovation, some advocate for a reimagined single-player experience. The sentiment leans toward a desire for Far Cry to depart from its recent formula, spanning the last three games and their respective expansions. It is all in favor of a more evolutionary direction rather than venturing into a multiplayer world.
