Gaming Layoffs: T2, EA, and Other Big Names in Job Cuts, New Projects Dropped

Take-Two Interactive follows the trend, reducing the workforce by 5% (almost 600 employees) this year. It now become a part of companies including SONY, EA, and Riot Games that implemented a similar policy in Gaming layoffs in 2024.

T2 Interactive, the company behind Rockstar Studios (Developers of the famous Grand Theft Auto franchise), announced the recent job cuts as part of the industry trend which has been prominent for two years now. The news came out on 16th April, alongside another key highlight of the company, canceling various ongoing projects. These projects are taken down due to reduced costs and streamlining the workforce to manage the key projects first. However, the solid details about the “which” project were not disclosed.

Despite this announcement, it is expected that Grand Theft Auto VI, the highly anticipated title set to launch next year, will remain unaffected. This news adds to the challenges faced by the gaming industry, which has been grappling with significant layoffs since 2023. Additionally, Take-Two is currently in the process of acquiring Gearbox, the developer of Borderlands, from Embracer Group for $460 million.

Jobs Cuts Across the Industry

Previously in March, EA-owned company Respawn Entertainment also reduced the workforce, especially from the dev team of the popular battle royale title, Apex Legends! Respawn Entertainment laid 23 employees to reduce the number of employees as a part of the workforce reduction trend in the gaming world.

Workforce reduction across the gaming sector is prominent in 2024 as until now many companies have implemented the same strategy. The reason behind this reduction is not quite specific as critics argue on major technological advancements. They highlight AI which enables teams to work more efficiently without the need for more developers. Still, these statements are social media talks without any evidence.
