Microsoft Partners with Inworld to Bring AI NPCs to Xbox

Microsoft is under the influence of AI as we can see the new updates to Windows 11 and Bing are full of AI solutions. Bing Chat or Microsoft’s AI copilot are some prominent examples of the tech giant’s interest in AI.

Now, Microsoft is expanding its AI adoption further to gaming by partnering with Inworld AI to create Xbox tools for developers. This will allow Xbox game developers to add AI-powered characters, stories, and quests in-game, making future titles much more immersive.

The Partnership

This partnership will foster AI adoption in the gaming sector. It is a multi-year collaboration between both firms and will include an “AI design copilot” system. This new solution will enable Xbox game devs to use AI prowess and create scripts, dialogue trees, quest lines, and more.

Speaking on the powers of generative AI, Haiyan Zhang, the General Manager of Gaming AI, Xbox said, “At Xbox, we believe that with better tools, creators can make even more extraordinary games.”

He added, “This partnership will bring together: Inworld’s expertise in working with generative AI models for character development, Microsoft’s cutting-edge cloud-based AI solutions including Azure OpenAI Service, Microsoft Research’s technical insights into the future of play, and Team Xbox’s strengths in revolutionizing accessible and responsible creator tools for all developers.”

Inworld AI Recent Developments

Inworld AI is currently working on a project that enables AI Non-Playable Characters (NPCs) to respond to player queries in-game just like ChatGPT or Bing Chat respond to your questions. This project will take the game to a new level as they are incorporating multiple voices and complex dialogue trees for personalized or dynamic in-game storylines.

Ilya Gelfenbeyn, the CEO of Inworld AI said of this partnership, “AI has long been an integral part of game development, with applications ranging from enemy AI to procedural generation.”

He added, “The emergence of large language models and generative AI has unlocked new opportunities for storytelling and character engagement within games.”

Microsoft’s Plan

The tech giant is aiming for a future with AI influence in gaming as it is positioning their automated solutions as a helping hand. Just like Copilot for Windows, the CEO emphasized making things easier for game developers through this partnership with Inworld AI.

Zhang said, “We want to help make it easier for developers to realize their visions, try new things, push the boundaries of gaming today, and experiment to improve gameplay, player connection, and more.”

“We will collaborate and innovate with game creators inside Xbox studios as well as third-party studios as we develop the tools that meet their needs and inspire new possibilities for future games.”
