Multiplayer Games Overtaking Single Player Titles, Unity 2024 Gaming Report

According to the Unity 2024 Gaming report, the modern game development sector is undergoing seismic changes. One key trend in the game development sector is the rise of multiplatform gaming. The report highlights the focus on multiplayer titles from major studios looking to attract more players online. Especially indie developers are taking this route with over 71% increase in multiplatform games in the last two years.

The report also highlights the releases on multi-platforms as companies are shifting towards a wider outreach for potential audiences. Between 2022 and 2023, over 34% of games are launched on 3 or more platforms, according to the Unity 2024 Gaming report.

Top Genres in Multiplayer Gaming

On the side of game genre, the Unity 2024 Gaming report shows Role-playing titles (RPGs) overtaking other multiplatform genres with 38% of the total gaming market. Shooter and fighting genres second the list with 33% contribution to multiplayer gaming. The third position in the list goes to strategy games, followed by Puzzle games and Battle Royale at the fifth spot.

Why Companies Love Multiplayer Development

Multiplayer gaming is the primary focus of developers as the Unity report highlights 68% of them are working on online titles. These include online as well as co-op for two or more platforms. Speaking of numbers, the mobile-only multiplayer games had significantly more monthly active users. With over 40.2% in comparison making the multiplayer titles more attractive for gamers to spend on. The multiplayer in-game spending rose by 10% in 2023 which ultimately means a $2.3 billion increase in multiplayer gaming revenue compared to 2022. A rise of an additional 7% in multiplayer revenue is expected in 2024 as well.
